In EU4, we used to be able to manipulate trade easily with the trade posts that the trade republics created. But because the centers of trade were added (and as these could be upgraded), trade republics' trade post mechanic became useless. Also, we can say that the 20 province limit that you have mentioned made things more difficult with the new map. Are there any plans for a general rework for trade republics? For example in CKII you can create trade posts beyond your borders. Also could trade posts can be upgraded similar to trade companies? Can we see any changes about this?
